Accredited Irish Language Course for visiting students 2022-2023

The aim of the courses below is to give basic knowledge and understanding of Irish to students who have no prior knowledge of the language.  Through these courses, the students’ communicative skills will be developed to enable them to interact through Irish in a range of basic everyday situations.
 
All courses are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, Level A1-A2.

Classes will be held in Áras na Gaeilge, an Irish-language centre on campus, that functions through the medium of Irish. Áras na Gaeilge also has an Irish-language restaurant. All classes will be held in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Course materials are included in the price.

The 5 & 10 ECT Courses begin the week commencing September 12, 2022 but you must first attend an information session in Áras na Gaeilge at 2pm on Monday, September 5, 2022. Registration for this module will take place at the information session.

25 November - End of Semester Written Examination: 10:00 am to 11:00 am  (for 5 ECTs) and at 10:00 am to 12:00 noon (for 10 ECTs)
25 November - End of Semester Oral Examination: Begins at 11:30 am (for 5 ECTs) and at 12:30 pm (for 10 ECTs)

You must contact us in advance if you cannot be present for the end of semester exam. No other examination dates will be organized for students except in cases of illness (a doctor’s certificate must be provided) or the exam time clashes with a lecutre.

Your choices are as follows:

1. Students staying for ONE semester

A) Irish for Beginners - 5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System)

Module Code: GDT 101.1

Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge is offering an Irish language course aimed at students with no prior knowledge of the Irish language, consisting of one 2 hour class per week. This class will focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Assessment Procedures
As well as continuous assessment, course participants will sit an oral and written examination at the end of the semester. Students will also be required to complete 5 assessments during the course.

Registration & Fee
Registration will take place at the information session and a fee of €30 will be payable in Room 103 Áras na Gaeilge to cover course materials.

Provisional class times are as follows:
Tuesday 10.00 a.m. –12.00 noon in Room 104
or
Wednesday 11.00 a.m. – 13.00 p.m. in Room 214
or
Thursday 10.00 a.m. – 12.00 noon in Room 204

B) Irish for Beginners - 10 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System)

Module Code: GDT 102.1 & GDT 103.1

Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge is offering an Irish language course aimed at students with no prior knowledge of the Irish language, consisting of two 2-hour classes per week. These classes will also focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Assessment Procedures
As well as continuous assessment, course participants will sit an oral and written examination at the end of the semester. Students will also be required to complete 5 assessments during the course.

Registration & Fee
Registration will take place at the information session and a fee of €60 will be payable in Room 103 Áras na Gaeilge to cover course materials.

Group 1 (10 ECTS)

Tuesday 10.00 a.m. – 12.00 noon in Room 106 
and
Thursday  11.00 a.m. – 13.00 p.m. in Room 106 

OR


Group 2 (10 ECTS)
Tuesday 11.00 a.m. – 13.00 p.m. in Room 204 
and
Thursday 10.00 a.m. – 12.00 noon in Room 104

2. Students staying for two semesters

Irish for Beginners (15 ECTS) - Module Codes: GA 170 + GA 171

Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge is offering a one year Irish language course with certification consisting of one 3 hour class per week. This class will also focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills

Assessment Procedures
As well as term assessments (two during the year), course participants will sit an oral and written examination at the end of the academic year. Students will also be required to complete 10 assessments during the course.

Fee & Registration
Registration will take place at the information session and a fee of €80 will be payable in Room 108 Áras na Gaeilge to cover course materials.

The above course commences the week beginning  October 3.
