Campus na hOllscoile

The National University of Ireland campus is a unique campus due to its proximity to the Connemara Gaeltacht. The regular use of the Irish language is an established part of social and academic life, while the city and university reflect the rich cultural ambience of a bilingual environment.

NUIG is very much a student friendly university and is aimed at in-depth research. NUIG has acquired international status and is extremely devoted to attaining a very high standard. NUIG is particularly committed to the Gaeltacht and the Irish language community. The University is committed to developing its unique strengths in providing a stimulating learning environment and will provide economic, social and cultural leadership. This results in an increase in achievements at a national, regional and local level.

Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge provides university courses and language advise. An tAcadamh is also involved in research development. The main objective an tAcadamh has is to provide a centre of excellence for research and education through the medium of Irish. 

The headquarters of an tAcadamh, as well as some other Centres, are located on the University Campus in Galway. 

Irish language Courses for Students

As part of the University’s aim of promoting the Irish language in the University and elsewhere, Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge provides the following programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students who wish to learn Irish or to improve their ability in the language:

Courses in the Gaeltacht

An tAcadamh organises courses in its Gaeltacht centres for students who wish to improve their Irish and gain experience of life in the Gaeltacht. Theses course are provided in Irish and also in the following areas; Gàidhlig, Translations, Computer Applications and Communications. Scholarships are available for students to assist them when attending these courses.

Services

In addition, there are other services available in Áras na Gaeilge for students and staff who wish to meet other Irish language speakers in the University or who wish to improve and practise their Irish. Among these services are:

• Restaurant for students and staff.
• Computer Laboratory.
• Theatre.
• Study room for postgraduate students.
• Photocopying facilities for students.

Irish Language Environment

Students and staff who speak Irish or who have an interest in the Irish language are always welcome in Áras na Gaeilge. Events are organised from time to time which give the Irish language community a chance to meet. The following are examples of such events:

• Bord na Gaeilge Annual Lecture.
• Irish language Literature and Culture Conference (under the auspices of Scoil na Gaeilge).
• A social event for staff members teaching through the medium of Irish.

The University Cumann Gaelach organises plays, debates and other events in Téatar Uí Chearbhalláin in Áras na Gaeilge.
