Áras Uí Chadhain: the Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge Centre in An Cheathrú Rua is named in honour of Máirtín Ó Cadhain. Máirtín Ó Cadhain originally hailed from An Cnocán Glas, An Spidéal. He is ranked among one of the greatest Irish language writers, a man whose heart and soul remained in the Gaeltacht and a man who played a central role in various societies and organistions whose aim it was to improve the standard of living in the Gaeltacht and attain basic rights for the community. His magnum opus is undoubtedly Cré na Cille. Ionad na Ceathrún Rua is situated in the heart of An Cheathrú Rua in the Connemara Gaeltacht. An Cheathrú Rua is approximately half an hours drive along the coast road from Galway City. |

An Cheathrú Rua is a Gaeltacht area that attracts many tourists each year. The natural beauty of the area, the people, the culture and the Irish language of course, attract a great deal of visitors to An Cheathrú Rua. An Cheathrú Rua sits on the coast and the beautiful clean beaches in the area are well known – Trá an Dóilín (a coral beach) included. The natural beauty of An Cheathrú Rua attracts artists, traditional singers, sailing enthusiasts and indeed the Connemara landscape is a source of inspiration to artists, musicians and writers who have based numerous works on this splendid area. While studying students are encouraged to experience both new and old traditions alongside each other – music, industry, song, dance, technology, boat festivals, nature. Students are given an excellent opportunity to experience the unique culture of the Gaeltacht. The Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge Centre in An Cheathrú Rua boasts state-of-the-art facilities. These facilities include three computer suites which are well-equipped with communication, information technology and translation software and equipment, a sound studio, production suite, editing room, television postproduction room and classrooms. Students also have access to all the services provided by the University via the Internet. |

The Irish language media industry is well-established in Connemara which is evident from the amount of language-centred organisations and businesses located in the area. The Raidió na Gaeltachta headquarters is located close by in Casla and the Teilifís na Gaeilge headquarters is located just 20 minutes away in Baile na hAbhann. The offices of the national Irish language newspaper Foinse is also located in An Cheathrú Rua. There are also numerous television production companies in the area, Telegael, EO Teilifís, Gaelmedia, and Abú Media to name but a few. The renowned publishing house Cló Iar-Chonnachta is located in Indreabhán. The Údarás na Gaeltachta headquarters are located in Na Forbacha, as well as the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. The translation industry is also developing in the area and companies such as Europus and TMI are providing translation and subtitling services to both national and international clients. There are also two Irish Language Colleges in An Cheathrú Rua: Coláiste Cholumba and Coláiste Chiaráin. |
