Mícheál was born and reared in London, England, and gave several years working in England and Ireland as a computer engineer and network and systems administrator. He is working for An tAcadamh since 2003 and is based in the centre in Roisín na Mainiach, Carna.
Research interests include speech synthesis and natural language processing; computer assisted language learning; linguistics and dialectics in the digital domain; Web and multimedia technologies; digital archiving; and the manipulation and delivery of folklore materials in electronic forms.
Mícheál did his master's degree at the University of Limerick, under the supervision of Gearóid Ó Néill, and completed the work in 2008. The two principal results of this research were the design of a multidialectical framework for Irish language speech synthesis and, based on this, the development of the first version of a multidialectical speech synthesis application, Sintéiseoir 1.0.
Mícheál was a member of the team which created the Joe Heaney Archives website, and was closely involved with Archives' design and technical development. He is the project's IT Director. He is currently developing Cartlanna Áras Shorcha Ní Ghuairim; an integrated archive of various cultural collections held by the Áras.
