Dónal is originally from An Spidéal in Cois Fharraige.
He is a graduate of the National University of Ireland, Galway where he completed a B.A. in Irish and English and an M.A. in Irish. When he completed his University education he began working as a television subtitler, and after that he worked as a self-employed translator and language consultant. He has done a lot of work based on television, including the translation of television programme scripts and he also gave advice on aspects of the language.
He began working as a Language Executive in Ionad Charna in November 2004.
Dónal developed a particular interest in Folklore whilst studying in the National University of Ireland, Galway and his M.A. thesis was based on the Folklore of Connemara. Due to his expertise in this field he is involved in teaching Folklore courses in Carna, and in the preparations and running of these courses.
He also works as a translator and proofreader for the various other courses that are taught in Ionad Charna, and he provides a language support service for the staff and students in Ionad Charna. Dónal is also involved in the course based on the development of language resources which is a part of the Comharchumann Shailearna Language Planning Initiative.
Dónal intends to do some further study based on Folklore with the intention of developing language resources, and basing academic studies on local Folklore.
