Carmel is from Gort an Choirce in Donegal.
In 1992 she completed a B.A. in Media Studies in the University of Ulster, Coleraine. After that she spent some time studying in the National Film and Television School, in Beaconsfield, England and she attended a training course in television production with RTÉ.
She spent 12 years working in the independent television sector in Ireland. During that period she worked for production companies throughout the country, for example EO Teilifís, Ocean Films, Besom Productions, Gaelmedia and Asylum Pictures.
She is working as a Communications Executive with an tAcadamh since 2003.
