Biography

Uinsionn is originally from Dún Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.  

He is currently studying for a doctorate degree based on the effects of globalisation on broadcasting services of the lesser spoken languages. He has an interest in various different aspects of communication, including: journalism, democracy and society; the role and effect TG4 has had; multimedia journalism. 

Journalism

Uinsionn received a journalism award at Féile an Oireachtais in 1991 for the quality of his journalism through Irish with the Irish Times. 

He has 15 years experience as an Irish and English language journalist and editor, both in Ireland and abroad. This experience encompasses various periods spent working in print media, on televison and as an occasional radio reporter. He spent five years during the nineties working as an Irish Language Editor with the Irish Times, and as the Western Correspondent for a year and a half. He was the first editor of the Irish language magazine called Cuisle. He also spent some time working as senior internet editor with the global news agency IntraFish and as a freelance journalist with Foinse.

Uinsionn sent reports to the Irish Times from Romania during the collapse of the Nicolae Ceaucescu dictatorship in December 1989; from Kosovo the following year and from Bosnia when the war was happening there. He has also written numerous reports and feature articles based on a wide variety of material for the newspaper since then.  

From March 2003 until February 2004 he had a yearlong contract as a reporter in the newsroom in TG4 in Baile na hAbhann. 

I bhfómhar na bliana 2004 d'oibrigh sé mar iriseoir físe neamhspleách, ag soláthar pacáistí nuachta i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla don chlár Seachtain ar RTÉ. Bhí sé i mbun na hoibre ceamaradóireachta ar a chuid pacáistí nuachta féin le linn an ama sin.

Teaching and administration

Uinsionn has spent some time teaching journalism courses in the National University of Ireland, Galway; the Galway-Mayo Technical Institute of Technology and in the IES in Dublin. Among the various roles he has in an tAcadamh are designing syllabi and teaching various modules in the B.A. sa Chumarsáid and the Dioplóma i Scileanna Raidió, and planning and developing new syllabi. 

Other relevant experience

Uinsionn worked as the Publicity and Information Manager with Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge towards the end of the eighties. He spent a year previous to that teaching in Pobalscoil Neasáin in Dublin. He is a member of the Parents Association of Scoil Cholmcille, An Tulach, Co. Galway.

Uinsionn was a member of the panel of speakers at the closing session of that conference, ’Cultural translation, friend or foe? How can small language communities use translation of film, television and literature to their own best advantage?’.
