Is Peadar is from Cois Fharraige in the Connemara Gaeltacht.
He has vast experience of community development through his work with community committees, co-operatives and cultural, social and language organisations. He was chairperson of the Gaeltacht Civil Rights Movement, Comharchumann Chois Fharraige, joint committee of Gaeltacht Chonamara and the national Glór na nGael committee. He was secretary of Comharchumann Shailearna and he is currently the Secretary of the Gaelic Athletic Association Irish language committee. He was Chairperson of Coimisiún na Gaeltachta, who published their report in 2002.
He has a B.A. in Irish and Economics as well as an M.A. sa Nua-Ghaeilge.
He spent six years working as a post-primary teacher and he is Director of Oifig na Gaeilge Labhartha in the National University of Ireland, Galway since 1973.
Among his responsibilities as Chief-Executive are promotion of the Irish language among the University community as well as provision of services for the community in the University’s catchment area in relation to Spoken Irish and courses run through the medium of Irish.
