Objectives

• Upon completion of this academic programme students will have a good understanding of the sociological, linguistic and planning strategies, including the cultural discourse most relevant to language planning.  
• Students will receive practical training in the information technology relevant to the social and sociolinguistic analysis necessary for language planning.  
• Contemporary issues relating to language planning will be explored in a national and international context.  
• The course will enable students to use analytical and strategic skills to implement effective language planning in the areas most relevant to them.

Entry requiremenrts

Applications are invited from people who satisfy one of the following 3 entry requirements:

• An honours degree (2.2 minimum), or
• A primary degree and at least 3 years of professional experience at management or executive level, or
• 5 years or more working at management or executive level in the Irish language sector, in the community development sector or in the voluntary sector, relevant to language planning. A portfolio including the following must be provided: CV, record of work experience including dates and letter of reference. Those students who wish to pursue the course but have not attained a degree are required to sit a preliminary examination. Applicants must have a good command of written and spoken Irish and must also do a preliminary interview.
  

Assessment 

There are 8 modules in this course. 5 modules are undertaken in first year and 3 modules in second year (by means of two seminars where the full-time option is chosen). A dissertation (15,000 words) must be written as part of the course. The course is taught through the medium of lectures, seminars, strategic working groups and workshops. The student’s progress is monitored through continuous assessment in the form of minor projects, theoretical essays, participation in course activities and a presentation.
