Application for admission is through the CAO. Applicants must have a minimum of grade B3 (higher level) in Irish and in English and a minimum of grade D3 in another four subjects in the Leaving Certificate, including another language.

Course overview

This programme affords you the opportunity to study two closely related subjects-Gaeilge (Irish) and Léann an Aistriúcháin (Translation Studies) - in one University degree

Aims and objectives

The course offers students the opportunity to study all aspects of Irish language literature, folklore and song covering the period from the middle ages to the present day. On completion, the student will have acquired a broad knowledge of the Irish language and of its heritage as a spoken and written language.
In the Léann an Aistriúcháin section of the course, students will study the theoretical and practical aspects of translating from one language to another. They will be taught the art of translation, with special emphasis on the Irish language as a target language.
The course will also introduce students to the work of a professional translator; this will include introducing students to cutting edge technology, including machine-assisted translation and subtitling.

Career Opportunities

People with a recognised qualification in Translation Studies and/or Irish have excellent employment opportunities. Factors influencing this include the status Irish now enjoys as an official language of the European Union, and the language requirements placed on Irish state organisations under the Official Languages Act, 2003. With this degree, students will have the opportunity to avail of employment in the translation industry and in organisations that function through Irish.
